Child’s Birthday Ideas
“Where The Wild Things Are”

Do you remember reading this book as a child and now have a child of your own or a grandchild? Maurice Sendak published this book in 1963 which won the 1964 Caldecott Medal which is pictured above. This book was in most homes during that time and it thrills me to see the love of this book come back to life!
A child’s birthday is such a special occasion and having one themed after this book is a wonderful tribute to these characters.
Max is a young boy who dresses in his wolf costume and wreaks havoc through his household and then sent to bed without his supper. As the story goes, his imagination transforms his bedroom into a jungle environment where Max is hailed as “King of the Wild Thing”. He has many adventures but then begins to feel lonely and homesick and gives up being king to sail back home.
Here you will find inspirational DIY ideas to create your very own “Where The Wild Things Are” party!

One simple way to create adorable centerpieces is to use your child’s name. I purchased these letters at Hobby Lobby but can be found at most craft stores. The first letter as seen above was of course the crown and buttons that Max wore in the book. This was created by faux fur for hair, felt for the crown and adding some buttons down the front. I then spray painted some bottles from Dollar Tree, painted the silhouette of the characters on the front and added greenery.
Grab some wood slices, add the letter, bottle and a touch of moss on top, look how adorable and so easy!

So many ideas are in the books illustration for all of your letters. This one was so super easy too! Most of your craft stores sells this peel and stick moss. Unroll the moss, trace the letter and then cut. I would suggest using a little hot glue to attached the moss to the letter to help secure it, especially if using outdoors.

This letter Y represents one of the monsters in the book. This was again very easy to make. Orange and yellow strips to match the monster’s shirt, faux fur and felt for the horns. There are so many possibilities for the letters, these are just a few examples.

Getting creative with food. I purchased this crown cookie cutter to make these cute sandwiches and placed in individual bags to keep them soft. Making these the night before helps keep your day a little less hectic!

Sample of fruits and veggies. Again, these can be made the night before and makes for a colorful display! Notice the mason jars pictured above. These jars can also be decorated as the characters to display silverware and greenery.

How sweet did this cake come out?? This was made by a local bakery and sandwich shop but there are truly amazingly talented bakers in your area to design a cake just for you. The key is to coordinate your theme when planning your party, even down to the yummy food!

Of course no birthday would be complete without cookies!! These adorable cookies are just precious and made by The Turquoise Cookie! These are sweet take home treats for the partygoers to remember what a great time they had at the party!

Remember when creating a food or display table, use items such as wood creates to give some height to your table. You would never guess that is an empty box underneath the tablecloth to give this cute character some height. Creating these different levels creates interest and allows items to be highlighted.

One last idea! For a grand entrance for your little birthday child, use a wagon and place red poster board around the sides, a pole for a mast and yellow poster board or material for a flag.
