DIY Wood & Napkin Cross
During the Easter season oftentimes the true meaning becomes less evident. The supplies to make this cross are simple but together make a huge statement.
Here are the supplies: Hobby Lobby- wood cross cutout and I Am the Resurrection napkins. Walmart- Waverly Chalk Paint in the color Snow White, Twine, green moss and Mod Podge. Hot glue.
These cutouts are normally made out of pretty rough wood so I suggest taking a hand sander to knock the edges off. Once completed then separate the napkin. Most napkins have one to three plys. (Remove all plys) Once removed the printed napkin is what will be applied to the cross.
First step is to paint the cross. I like to add a little water to my paint so that it goes on smoother. While the cross is drying, cut a square around the wording “I Am the Resurrection”. Also cut the flowers as seen below in the full vertical length of the cross.
Apply Mod Podge to the back of the cross vertically and then apply the flowers. Make sure that the printed side is facing down so it will be seen the correct way when viewing from the front of the cross. This will give the cross a “stained glass” look. I like to use a dryer to help the napkin seal to the cross.
To make the crown of thorns, wrap the twine around three fingers about 15 times. Remove the twine from fingers while holding it tightly so that it stays a circle. Begin threading the end of the twine through the center and begin wrapping it around the circle. This will create the “thorns”. Continue going all the way around. Once it is complete tie off the end and tuck it into the back of the crown.
Hot glue the crown to the top of the cross. Add the other flowers to the front of the cross with Mod Podge and add the green moss to the base with hot glue. How pretty did this come out? Simple but what a powerful statement.
